Key Differences Over Denuclearization Put Trump-Kim Summit in Peril”

President Donald Trump on Thursday reassured North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un that he would remain in power under a nuclear deal with the United States, emphasising that his administration is not seeking regime change amid threats from Pyongyang to cancel a historic summit next month.

In the last analysis, the United States should be willing to accept both the concessions to the North that the South is willing to make and the risks from the North that the South is willing to take.

On Thursday, Trump - while sitting at arm's length from Bolton in the Oval Office - denied Bolton's claims, saying: "The Libyan model isn't a model that we have [in mind] at all when we're thinking of North Korea".

In the future, the US will stop futilely imploring allies to do more for their own defense and will begin telling them that their defense is primarily their own responsibility.

Pyongyang has been angered by continuing US-South Korea joint military exercises which it sees as a rehearsal for invasion.

Ri was apparently referring to a news conference held at South Korea's National Assembly on Monday by Thae Yong Ho, a former senior North Korean diplomat who defected to the South in 2016.

However, he stressed that North Korea would have to abandon its nuclear weapons.

As for President Trump, so far, he has refrained from making a statement about the new developments leading up to the planned summit, either before the media or via his Twitter account.

The president surmised that a change of tone this week by North Korea about the planned Trump-Kim June 12 summit in Singapore could be the result of a recent second meeting between Kim and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Pyongyang on Wednesday responded strongly, saying that the country may reconsider the scheduled Trump-Kim summit because of extremely provocative remarks made by American officials.

Chang then speculated that one factor could well have been Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's offer to take North Korea of the official US list of "state sponsors of terrorism" if the Kim regime hands over five nuclear devices.

By contrast, Trump added, a deal with North Korea "would be with Kim Jong Un, something where he'd be there, he'd be in his country, he'd be running his country, his country would be very rich, his country would be very industrious".

But Trump warned that failure to make a deal could have grave consequences for Kim.

North Korea took "a resolute step" to postpone the North-South high-level talks indefinitely until the South Korean authorities "take a responsible measure, and notified it to them and made this public through a KCNA report", he said.

Mr Trump said Libya was "a much different model". It does mean a review and reassessment of all the guarantees we have issued to go to war on behalf of other countries, and the eventual transfer of responsibility for the defense of our friends over to our friends.

Trump and his aides have continued to insist that the Kim regime must agree to give up its nuclear programme as part of any deal.

But foreign policy analysts have said that the policy is faltering amid Kim's diplomatic outreach to South Korea and China.

On Wednesday, Bolton said odds were still in favour of the U.S. The allies say the drills are defensive in nature.

Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said Thursday that the schedule of military exercises hasn't changed. In typical fashion, Trump has made clear that he hopes to achieve a lasting peace between North and South Korea, a maddeningly hard goal that is of course impossible without North Korean cooperation.

"It is true that there are differences of opinion between the North and the United States on methods to accomplish denuclearisation", Kang told lawmakers, according to Yonhap News Agency.

First, North Korea scolded the US for insisting the Communist nation must "unilaterally" eliminate its nuclear weapons program.
