Mercedes set the pace in practice for Spanish GP”

Lewis Hamilton ended Sebastian Vettel's dominant run in Formula One qualifying by setting a track record and wining pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix on Saturday.

Hamilton led from pole, with Vettel nipping forward of Bottas to take second, however behind them there was carnage as Romain Grosjean span his Haas, with the luckless Nico Hulkenberg (Renault) and Pierre Gasly (Toro Rosso) ploughing into him. In a strong race for Mercedes, his team-mate Valtteri Bottas was second, with the Red Bull of Max Verstappen in third.

Procession remained relatively peaceful until the pit stop war began with Ferrari hailing Vettel in for a set of medium tires after lap 18 for a 2.5 second stop.

Hamilton says he felt in sync with his auto on Sunday as he won by over 20 seconds, and highlights Mercedes' understanding of the way the vehicle behaves as key to his confidence. Earlier than planned pit stops for Vettel meant that ultimately he had to concede not only second place to Bottas but also third to Verstappen.

This marks Verstappen's first podium of the 2018 season.

Mercedes had opted to keep both drivers out through the VSC and to one-stop them both and it had paid off. Hamilton had been serene in his control with Bottas squarely at his back they returned the result Mercedes have been looking for all season. "People probably think it was an easy race and I was cruising but I wasn't cruising".

Hamilton conceded that he will head to the next round in Monaco with caution rather than in expectation following his poor display at the principality a year ago, but the 64th win of his career will, for the first time this term, provide him with optimism that he can outdo Vettel in their tug of war for glory.

"I was comfortable but at no point did I feel like I was going to lose it".

"We had such a good vehicle, the team was so reactive today with the strategy".

Mexican Sergio Perez was ninth for Force India and Monegasque rookie Charles Leclerc took the final point for Sauber.

Vettel won in Australia and Bahrain, while Ricciardo was first in China. With two podiums in the first four races, the Ferrari driver can still take some respite from his promising start to the campaign despite a disappointing day in Barcelona.

Australian Daniel Ricciardo was fifth in the second Red Bull ahead of Dane Kevin Magnussen of Haas and Spaniards Carlos Sainz, of Renault, and two-time champion Fernando Alonso, of McLaren.

In total, six cars failed to finish. Hamilton now leads Vettel by 17 points in the title race.

But it was the virtual safety vehicle that arguably had the biggest say in Sunday's race.

"I was trying to go for every sector record", he laughed. The next race on the calendar is the Monaco Grand Prix on 27 May.

After another incident on Lap 44, Esteban Ocon retired after Verstappen went into the back of his auto, while McLaren's Stoffel Vandoorne lost power on his vehicle and was also forced to retire.
