6 killed in Indonesia church attacks”

Indonesia has seen "current resurgence in homegrown militancy", the wire service reported.

According to Reuters, at least three suicide bombers detonated themselves in Indonesia's Surabaya City in East Java on Sunday.

Frans Barung, a spokesman for East Java's police, said one churchgoer was killed and 11 people suffered injuries.

"We have confirmed one died at the scene, one died at the hospital, two police officers were injured and there are some civilians injured", Mangera said.

Nine people have been killed following an attack on three churches by suicide bombers on Sunday, reported the BBC.

The attack was followed by a second explosion in another church that killed another person, while two were rushed to a hospital. It was not clear if any other perpetrators were among those killed or injured.

"I was frightened. many people were screaming", 23-year-old witness Roman told AFP after the blast at Santa Maria.

The newest assaults got here days after police ended a riot and hostage-taking at a detention middle close to Jakarta that left 5 useless and 5 injured.

A senior police official said the bombings were carried out by at least five suicide bombers, including a veiled woman who had two children with her.

Earlier, television images showed debris scattered around the entrance of one church and police cordoning off areas as crowds gathered. No one has yet claimed responsibility.

A same incident took place a few weeks ago where security forces were killed during a 36-hour standoff with militant Islamist prisoners at a high security prison on the outskirts of the capital Jakarta.

Indonesia has carried out a sustained crackdown on militants since bombings by al Qaida-affiliated radicals in Bali in 2002 killed 202 people.

El Shinta radio station says the almost-simultaneous attacks occurred during Sunday morning Masses.
