Rolls-Royce Cullinan is an Action Saxon SUV

Rolls-Royce Cullinan is an Action Saxon SUV”

The Cullinan is the most expensive vehicle in an emerging category of six-figure sport utes that will soon include offerings from Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Bentley, and Mercedes. The "world's most anticipated SUV" and the first-ever high-riding model from Rolls-Royce, the Cullinan, shows its face to the world wearing a name inspired by the largest single-piece diamond ever discovered on the planet. Instead, this is an all-terrain, high-sided motor-car. This helps keep road noise down and allows the boot to be opened without disturbing rear-seat occupants.

Things are, as you'd imagine, rather luxurious in the rear seating compartment, but here buyers do get to choose between a "Lounge seating" configuration that caters for three rear passengers and a more opulent "Individual" seating arrangement sporting two seats separated by a fixed console that incorporates a drinks cabinet with whisky glasses, champagne flutes and a refrigerator. A 0-62mph time has not been released but is likely to be similarly impressive. To suit its SUV mission, the steering wheel is thicker-gripped and smaller-radius than your typical, chauffeur-spun Rolls wheel. Stay tuned for our full Rolls-Royce Cullinan coverage. The same striking, boxy design is present, as is Rolls' trademark grille and the famed Spirit of Ecstasy bonnet mascot - both of which dominate the front of the vehicle. The module provides custom designed storage for tools suitable to an owner's hobbies, like hawking, hunting, or drone racing, or it can stow the seats and cocktail table for the Rolls-Royce Viewing Suite. The vehicle itself lowers by 40mm when unlocked or when its door handles are operated, while the wide-opening "suicide" doors and flat floor further help access. The upper fascia gets a newly developed "Box Grain" black leather.

And as this is very much a driver's Rolls-Royce; a functional dash layout features a symmetrical facia and simple connections plus Rolls' version of BMW's excellent iDrive infotainment system.

The Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV is pictured in an undated handout image. The cargo area can swallow 19 cubic feet with the parcel shelf in place and rear seatbacks up, 21 cubic feet without the shelf, and 68 cubic feet with the cargo floor raised and the rear seats folded. In another nod to modernity, there are five USB slots around the cabin, along with wireless charging for smartphones in the front. The first in Rolls-Royce history.

"Only one engine will initially be offered and it's Rolls" venerable 6.75 litre twin-turbocharged V12, delivering 563bhp and 627lb ft of effortless torque, all mated to an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission.

Four-wheel drive isn't the only first for the Cullinan, either.

Engaging the Everywhere button between the front seats will change the car's settings ready for what is claimed to be the most serene ride over the most challenging surfaces anywhere in the world - including the UK's potholes.

It is the second vehicle to be built on the carmaker's all-new aluminium architecture.

Exposed metal tailpipes stick out from each side of the rear bumper, which Rolls-Royce says reinforce the Cullinan's "power and ability".
