Mormons Sever Ties with Boy Scouts of Americaā€¯

The GSMW release says Girl Scouts has been the premier girl leadership development organization and the girl expert for 106 years, and states there is no organization that more thoroughly understands the value of programming designed specifically for girls. However, the final nail in the coffin seems to be the decision, announced last week, to change the name of the Boy Scouts to "Scouts BSA" and to allow girls.

The Mormon church said it made the decision because it's expanded outside the United States, and wants to explore new youth programs that serve its worldwide members. But the two don't seem to be connected: In a statement Tuesday night, Mormon leaders said the LDS Church would be launching its own youth program for both boys and girls.

In its own statement, the Boy Scouts of America thanked the Mormon Church for its century of cooperation, wishing the Church success in its own program and inviting Mormon boys and girls who wish to continue their careers as Scouts to do so. In 2015, the church raised concerns over the BSA's decision to lift its ban on openly gay troop leaders.

Boys still would be able to join Boy Scout troops that are independent of churches.

Like other conservative faiths, the Mormon church opposes gay marriage and teaches that being in a homosexual relationship is a sin.

Kaitlyn Barnett of Troy has been named as a Governor's Volunteer Service Awardee for her service to Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois.

But now, after 100 years, the Mormon Church leaves the Boy Scouts of America. "In so doing, it will be necessary for the Church to discontinue its role as a chartered partner".

He is Mormon, and a former Boy Scout himself.

The group retained lobbyists in Georgia and NY, where lawmakers say such action helped stall proposals that included "lookback" windows allowing adults to take legal action over decades-old claims. Some expressed disappointment, recounting the positive and challenging experiences the Boy Scouts provided them in their youth.

The Church removed 185,000 boys between the ages of 14 and 18 from the Boy Scouts previous year, and plans to move its remaining 425,000 boys into a youth program it is working on.

The church plans on remaining involved and invested in the program throughout this year and the next.

"So roughly you're talking about 5-6 percent of our membership that we hope to still have be involved in scouting", Mead said.

"The great challenge that Mormonism is facing right now is if it can make that leap from being simply a religion that is present all around the world and become a religion that is rooted all around the world", said Matthew Bowman, a Mormon scholar and associate professor of history at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.

Historically, the LDS church has been the biggest sponsor of BSA in the country. The 425,000 Mormon boys represent about 18.5 percent of 2.3 million youth in the boy scouts.
