Central Intelligence Agency nominee says torture doesn't work

Central Intelligence Agency nominee says torture doesn't work”

"In my view - a view shared by all nine former directors and acting directors - the CIA was able to collect valuable intelligence that contributed to the prevention of further terrorist attacks".

But she did not declare, flat out, that torture is wrong and that she regretted her role in it. For them, Haspel's history as a torturer was merely part of winning her spurs within an agency built upon violence, murder and criminality. I want to trust that you have the moral compass you said you have. They developed a series of "harsh interrogation" tactics meant to make subjects feel helpless, and therefore cooperative, and they sometimes carried them out firsthand, including hands-on participation of interrogating terrorism suspects at a site where Haspel was the officer in charge.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) isn't alone in his concern about Haspel's former management of a secret Central Intelligence Agency detention facility.

Waterboarding is a form of torture in which water is poured over a cloth covering the face of a person, eliciting the feeling of drowning. She presently holds the official title of Deputy Director. "They use unfair trade and other practices to undermine our industrial and technical base", Mr. Rubio said. She also participated in the decision to destroy videotapes showing prisoners being tortured.

"It is important to recall the context of those challenging times immediately following 9/11", she said.

On being asked if she would make personal pledge of loyalty to Trump if he asked, Haspel said she doesn't think the US President would do that. At the same time, she insisted, "We followed the law then, and we follow the law now".

"We're not getting back into that business", she added.

"I believe Gina Haspel is a patriot who loves our country and has devoted her professional life to its service and defense", McCain noted.

Before she worked her way up the ranks of the C.I.A., from undercover operative to second-in-command, Haspel spent her early-childhood in Kentucky.

McCain is a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, which heard Haspel's testimony Wednesday, but it is unclear if McCain would be able to return for the vote.

Arizona Sen. John McCain said in a statement he opposed her nomination due to her "disturbing" role in overseeing the use of torture at a black site in Thailand.

McCain has been home in Arizona battling brain cancer since the end of a year ago, and is not expected to return for the vote. Her refusal to acknowledge torture's immorality is disqualifying.

Her nomination had appeared to be in trouble before the hearing, with The Washington Post reporting she offered to withdraw late last week and had to be talked down by White House officials. Her words were entirely in sync with the Trump administration's National Security Strategy, which has shifted Washington's focus from the "war on terrorism" to preparation for "great power" conflicts with Russian Federation and China, i.e., a third world war. She told senators Wednesday that she had "absolutely" supported the destruction of 92 tapes, all depicting one detainee being interrogated, over concerns "about the security risk that was posed to our officers". Joe Manchin - may be willing to reach across the aisle for her confirmation. After the hearing, Collins's office released a statement saying the senator would also vote for confirmation. Democrats called that a blatant conflict of interest. "Was that the environment in which you and the country were operating in at the time?"

"On my watch, C.I.A. will not restart a detention and interrogation program", Haspel said.
