North and South Korea were due to play each other in the quarterfinals of the World Team Table Tennis Championships in Halmstad, Sweden, but instead of going head-to-head chose to form a unified team.

Following the unification, the Unified Korea Team will be competing in the semi-finals against the victor between Japan and Ukraine as Korea (COR), and both teams will be seated at the bench during their match as a sign of unity between the teams.

Nigeria's table tennis team successfully made it to the knockout stages of the ongoing World Team Table Tennis Championships holding in Halmstad, Sweden. This is the first unified Korean ping-pong squad since the 1991 World Table Tennis Championships in Chiba City, Japan.

North and South Korea joined forces on Thursday rather than play against each other in the quarter-finals. The team was to play Japan on Friday.

The President of Qatar and Arab Table Tennis Federations Khaleel Al Mohannadi, who is also the first deputy of ITTF President, said that the Koreas' decision to field united team a clear message of peace.

"Table tennis has contributed greatly to global peace, and it's important to aim to build peace in society through sports", he said.

"I thought the joint team was only a part of history".

Table tennis additionally comes with an background in diplomacy.

Veteran Liu Shiwen beat Lee Ho Ching 3-1 in the third game to help China lead by 2-1.

When the athletes appeared on court, the public address system announced that there was no North and no South, but Korea.

International Table Tennis Federation president Thomas Weikert underlined the significance of the decision. He was quoted in a press release stating, "When I informed the Board of Directors about this development, the unified team received a standing ovation from the delegates who showed their sign of support to this historic move".

The two Koreas are also trying to have the combined team at this year's Asian Games in Indonesia.
