Ruling party names Erdogan as presidential candidate”

Turkey's two largest opposition parties will today announce their candidates for the historic June 24 presidential election.

Turkey's ruling political party nominated President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Thursday as its candidate for next month's early presidential elections, as opposition parties band together to challenge the incumbent leader.

At a Republican People's PartY (CHP) conference at a sports arena in the capital, Ankara, party chief Kemal Kilicdaroglu announced Ince as the candidate, to roaring applause from attendees.

Erdoğan said the vote, originally scheduled for November 2019, was moved up to accelerate Turkey's change from a primarily parliament system to one giving the president more executive authority.

He had famously vowed to sell off Erdogan's huge presidential palace opened in 2014 should he be elected.

AKP noted that Erdogan's candidacy for the presidency is also supported by the opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).

Ulgen said both Ince and Aksener could vie for a place in a second round run-off against Erdogan but he would still need to "cannibalise" some of the conservative vote to beat the president.

He is a veteran of Turkish politics who has been a member of parliament since 2002 and has twice stood for leadership of his party.

"Despite being held a political hostage in a cell, I believe I can fulfil this tough mission", Demirtas said in a message read to the rallies, warning however that the campaign would be "hard and unjust".
