#RedforED leaders vow to return when budget is passed”

A teacher walkout in Arizona will extend into a sixth day after Arizona legislators on Wednesday failed to vote on a budget to grant educators a 20 percent raise.

Educators in red shirts cheered and jeered Wednesday night inside the legislative chambers where lawmakers were in the early stages of debating a Republican-backed $10.4 billion spending plan.

The longest statewide teacher strike is going to drag into another day today, at least for some of those who have been out of work now since last Thursday. It is largely expected to pass on Wednesday.

Thursday was also a disappointing moment for numerous demonstrating teachers.

Heather Fuentes, an administrative assistant in the Paradise Valley School District, gave an update on the walkout to about 80 parents and community members at a park.

They're also pushing lawmakers for other considerations such as a 10 percent raise for support staff. Several school districts have been so confident in a resolution that they announced they'd be re-opening their doors Thursday. Gonzalez spoke of horror stories from teachers in some of the larger school districts in the state - leaky roofs, long-term substitute teachers and high teacher-to-student ratios.

Some districts re-opened this week after determining they had enough staff to provide a safe learning environment.

Arizona teachers say they'll go back to the classroom Thursday if the governor's budget deal gets passed. "We have options, but it is time for us to get back to our students, and back into our classrooms", said Garelli.

"We expect a long day and hope to make progress on the budget", said Matt Specht, spokesman for House Speaker J.D. Mesnard.

That pressure also also resulted in Ducey agreeing to meet with teachers - though pointedly not with either Karvelis or AEA President Joe Thomas.

Outside the Capitol on Wednesday, the statewide #RedForEd walkout's fifth day, protesters chanted, "No bill, no school".

Karvelis helped create Arizona Educators United with other teachers after a strike in West Virginia yielded a 5 percent pay raise.

Gladys Garcia said many of her students rely on free or reduced price meals at Challenger Middle School in Tucson and she organized with colleagues to collect food to hand out at a local public library.

"There are hundreds of families contacting me that are harmed financially, occupationally", an emotional Rep. Kelly Townsend said.

The Senate was expected to begin floor debate on the budget at 8 p.m., and the House expected similar timing.

Organizers of the strike had called for classes to resume Thursday if the budget passed.

"This budget supports Arizona's top priorities by improving the public education system and rewarding our teachers", Ducey tweeted out on Tuesday in support of his plan. In addition to the many supporting their cause, others expressed anger at the teachers for going on strike.

Lawmakers did tweak it with changes to the rosy economic projections Ducey relied on to make funding more sustainable.

When the plan started moving through the legislature, they said they'd go back to school and figure out new ways to keep the momentum going.

Leaders with AEU and the state's teacher union, the Arizona Education Association, said Tuesday they were ready to accept the budget and head back to school - even if they were not particularly satisfied with it.

"Teachers can return knowing that the legislature heard their concerns and delivered the pay increase they deserve", Yarbrough said in a statement.
