In a statement, the PEC deplored the alarming rise in media victims (by 57 per cent) even as the world prepared for the press freedom day on Thursday.

The one-day conference will be held under the auspices of Sheikh Hamad bin Thamer al-Thani, chairman of Qatar Media Corporation, and sponsored by DCMF and Kahramaa. It is vital for sustainable development.

We are eagerly awaiting a ruling by the Inter-American Human Rights Court in the case of Colombian journalist Nelson Carvajal, murdered 20 years ago. The theme also aims to explore legislative gaps with regard to freedom of expression and online information, and the risks of regulating online speech.

Today is World Press Freedom Day which will be observed by around the world.

Mr Engida quoted the former UN Secretary-General and author Shashi Tharoor as saying: "Freedom of the press is the mortar that binds together the bricks of democracy and it is also the open window embedded in those bricks".

Making the commentary as it released its annual World Press Freedom Index, the RSF ranked Fiji 57 out of 180 countries, an improvement of 10 points from 2017 when Fiji was ranked 67.

He said journalists and media workers shine a light on local and global challenges and tell the stories that need to be told.

According to Alh. Ngaing Demba Thomas, a free press along with an independent judiciary is essential for the protection of human rights. Their service to the public is invaluable.

She added, "Any State under the rule of law that respects individual freedoms, and particularly the freedoms of opinion, conscience and expression, relies on a free, independent press that is safe from censorship or coercion".

"It is with this understanding, current and past executives of the Media Association have called for further consultation on the Cyber Crime Bill and all new legislation or amendments which have the potential to criminalise professional journalists working in the public interest".

Egyptian photojournalist Mahmoud Abu Zeid, known as Shawkan, who was selected by an independent worldwide jury of media professionals as the laureate of the 2018 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano Press Freedom Prize received his award in abstention.
