WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum steps down from Facebook

WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum steps down from Facebook”

He announced his departure through a Facebook post in which he thanked the people who had supported him to build WhatsApp.

Post its acquisition by Facebook the WhatsApp user base has almost tripled to 1.35 billion active monthly users. The team is stronger than ever and it'll continue to do awesome things. "But it is time for me to move on". People familiar with the matter claim that the WhatsApp co-founder had become more and more concerned about how Facebook harvests user data.

Facebook refused to comment on Koum's departure. It was at Ernst and Young that Koum met the fellow business partner and co-founder of WhatsApp, Brian Acton.

The billionaire founder of WhatsApp, Jan Koum, announced he is quitting.

The date of his departure has yet to be confirmed, but Koum, who had a seat at Facebook's board of directors over the last few years, has been reported to have some disagreements over personal data collection, as his working area relies in one of the largest and most successful messaging apps now in the world. Disagreement is based on Facebook's use of personal data and its attempts to weaken the service use of encryption. And with Koum leaving the company, as Mark said there is no one to argue with him about privacy and it's possible that this harvesting of data could increase since such a move wouldn't be out of character for the social network.

When the Ukrainian-born Koum first launched WhatsApp, he promised to respect user privacy. Alongside this, Facebook revealed some key numbers of WhatsApp. Facebook's enormous profits, meanwhile, are powered nearly entirely by advertising targeted to its users' interests.

WhatsApp, a pun on the phrase "What's up?", grew in popularity in part because its encrypted messages are stored on users' smartphones and not on company servers, making the service more private.

This story has been corrected to note that Koum reportedly clashed with Facebook management, not specifically with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
