University of MI represented in Tony nominations for 'Mean Girls'”

Splashy pop musicals SpongeBob Squarepants and Mean Girls led the 2018 Tony Award nominations with 12 nods each, but not every big brand name came out on top. Louderman says she's from a small town where "people don't really get out and dream big". Both were eligible in the Leading Actress in a Musical category, for which six of their competitors were nominated - indicating there was a tie for the final slot, and neither one of them were up for it.

The two-part "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child", got 10 nods, among them Anthony Boyle, who plays Scorpius Malfoy in a highly energetic performance.

SpongeBob was also nominated for Best Lighting Design (hardly surprising, seeing as it takes place in the animated, madcap ocean bed of Bikini Bottom) as well as for Best Leading Actor. "I just really thought I would never be here".

Other nominations also went to three quasi-queer musicals: the My Fair Lady revival, which has a priggish male couple at its heart; Summer: The Donna Summer Musical about the legendary disco diva; and the don't-need-a-prince sisterly duo in the stage adaptation of Disney's Frozen.

The Best Play nominations include The Children, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Junk, and Fairnelli and the King. "Broadway audiences are incomparable".

One surprise was the relatively few nominations for Disney's "Frozen" - three, for best original score, best book and best musical. Carousel was nominated for Best Revival of a Musical against My Fair Lady and Once on This Island, while Angels in America is up for Best Revival of a Play.

Bruce Springsteen, whose solo show mixes songs and stories from his best-selling memoir "Born to Run" and has been banking over $2 million each week he's onstage, will be granted a special, non-competitive Tony, along with John Leguizamo for "Latin History for Morons".

The Tony Awards, hosted by platinum-selling singers and Broadway stars Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban, will air live from New York's Radio City Music Hall on CBS Sunday, June 10 at 8 p.m. ET.
