Armenia's parliament to elect new prime minister May 1”

Also, the President of Armenia spoke in detail about the history of the conflict, mistakes and shortcomings, the situation in the parliament and consultations that he is now holding with parliamentary coalitions.

Eight days after his presidential term was up, Sargsyan was elected Armenia's prime minister.

However, it's still unclear whether or not all parliamentary forces will vote in favor of the "people's" candidate, who is also a nominee from the Yelk opposition faction.

Mirzoyan said that Pashinyan's government would be temporary, followed by free and fair parliamentary elections.

On Thursday, the protests will move to Gyumri, Armenia's second biggest town in the country's north. But the protesters have made clear that they consider the whole government tainted by his drive to shift power from the president to the premier.

Pashinian has threatened extended protests, which continued Thursday, if the Republican Party nominates a candidate.

"Vladimir Putin and Armen Sargsyan stressed that in order to overcome the internal crisis all political forces in this country, it is important to exercise restraint and responsibility, readiness to solve existing problems through constructive dialogue strictly within the constitutional framework", - said the press service of the Kremlin.

Last night Pashinyan told protesters in central Yerevan that he'd gained reassurances that Russian Federation will not intervene in Armenia's internal affairs.

Earlier this week he ruled out challenging the presence of Russian military bases in Armenia or the country's membership in Russia-led military and economic alliances.

In the meantime, former Prime Minister Karen Karapetian will stand in for Sargsyan until a new PM is elected.

Pashinyan, a former journalist turned lawmaker who has been instrumental in organising the protests, has demanded the job. "In our decisions, we will be guided by the voice of the people, by the people's will".

Armenia's turmoil deepened Wednesday as tens of thousands of people took to the streets after the opposition accused the ruling party of refusing to cede power following the resignation of veteran leader Serzh Sarkisian.

"I want to tell Karen Karapetyan: I want you to understand that we will of course not allow you to implement such steps and the sooner you understand this the better it will be for everyone", he said.

Opposition lawmaker calls on political groups to pave the way for "a new Armenia" amid political crisis.
