Southwest offers apology, compensation to passengers

Southwest offers apology, compensation to passengers”

An associate professor for the University of Oklahoma aboard a Dallas-bound Southwest Airlines flight Tuesday struggled to pull a woman back into the plane after she was sucked into a hole left by a shattered window.

Jennifer Riordan, a 43-year-old bank executive and mother of two from Albuquerque, was killed Tuesday when the engine exploded.

European and US airline regulators on Friday ordered mandatory inspections within 20 days of aircraft engines similar to one involved in a fatal Southwest Airlines accident earlier this week.

Needum said his heart is broken for Riordan's young children and he doesn't consider himself a hero.

To Mackey, it was a "godsend" when fellow passengers Tim McGinty and Andrew Needum tugged Riordan's body back inside the cabin. "Don't let me suffer", she said.

Passengers said Shults walked through the aisle and talked with them to make sure they were OK after the plane touched down.

The individual said the fact that Riordan had her seat belt fastened most likely allowed passengers who reacted quickly to pull her back into the airplane.

In air traffic control audio, Shults spoke calmly and slowly, describing the emergency unfolding more than 30,000 feet in the air - all the while trying to land a plane with engine failure. I'm going to send her a Christmas card, I'm going to tell you that, with a gift certificate for getting me on the ground.

"We have part of the aircraft missing ..."

And what about the other women, those who might have been nearly as (or just as) capable as Shults, but lacked her fortitude, or her determination, or maybe a bit of luck along the way?

Shults and Ellisor said they won't be partaking in any interviews, and "ask that the public and the media respect our focus".

"While we at that time had an exclusion, she was in fact helping male pilots hone their skills", Flanders said.

More than 150 have already been inspected. "She served at the Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron (VAQ-34) in Point Mugu, Calif., as an instructor pilot flying the EA-6B Prowler and F/A-18 Hornet", Sears said. "I knew that every thought I had, every choice I made, everything I said, everything I did or did not do would be scrutinized not only by investigators, but by aviation professionals for years". "She's a very confident person".
