Golovkin Moves On- With or Without Caneloā€¯

It was officially announced on Wednesday that Gennady Golovkin will fight Vanes Martirosyan on May 5 following the withdrawal of Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, who pulled out earlier this month in the wake of two positive tests for banned substance clenbuterol.

The unbeaten WBA, WBC and IBF middleweight champion will defend his titles against Vanes Martirosyan on 5 May at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

His last bout took place on September 2017, a controversial split draw to unified middleweight world titleholder Gennady Golovkin.

With Alvarez, a Mexican, fighting on Cinco de Mayo, the rematch had been billed as one of the boxing events of the year.

The Mexican boxer twice tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug in February and was given his punishment at a hearing in Nevada on Wednesday.

Team Golovkin is now pursuing fight options for what would be a record-tying twentieth defense of the middleweight title- a record set by long-time 160 lb. champ, Bernard Hopkins in 2005.

"As we have maintained all along", Golden Boy's statement read, "the trace amounts of clenbuterol found in Canelo's system in February came from meat contamination, and we provided the Nevada State Athletic Commission with a great deal of evidence to support those facts". "And our guy is in the gym and ready to fight".

But with that fight likely to go on pay-per-view in America, they would not want to clash with Alvarez against Golovkin which would be a big sell on HBO PPV.

"I am truly shocked about what has happened and for those who have doubts and suspicions about my integrity".

Gennady Golovkin getting stripped of the IBF title would be a blow to his hopes of unifying the middleweight division. I have a lot of Mexican fans.

While the first bout between the two was months in the making, Alvarez's suspension and this unexpected delay could perhaps heighten interest and intrigue for a rematch that the boxing world already pegged as the most anticipated fight of the year.
