SUSPECT IDENTIFIED: Murder on Binghamton University campus”

Police are investigating the deadly stabbing of a Binghamton University freshman who died Sunday. Court documents say he stabbed Joao Souza multiple times in room G17 of Windham Hall.

A first-year Binghamton University student was stabbed to death on campus Sunday night in what investigators are saying "does not appear to be a random act".

Amid the search, university police said the suspect could still be armed and released surveillance photos of him wearing dark trousers and a dark, hooded sweatshirt as they asked for the public's help.

Jonathan Ross, superintendent of the Blind Brook school district in Westchester County, told the Journal News that Souza graduated previous year from Blind Brook High School in Rye Brook, where he was a standout soccer player.

Searchers are being aided in wooded areas by state forest rangers. Police said the suspect fled on foot and is described as a "light skinned male wearing dark trousers and a dark hoodie".

This was the second slaying of a student in the last two months. Haley Anderson, 22, was killed at an Oak Street residence in Binghamton in March.

The fatal stabbing occurred around 10:30 p.m., according to a B-Alert sent out by the University at 11:14 p.m. Binghamton's New York State University Police (UPD) were on the scene, as well as New York State Police. She had been strangled.

The University is offering a number of services for students, faculty and staff following the incident.

Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell said, "We spoke to many witnesses and many leads were developed and still had to be followed up on".
