Russia Warns of New Wave of Migrants in Case of Syrian 'Miscalculation'”

The UN Security Council overwhelmingly rejected a Russian resolution calling for condemnation of "aggression" by the United States, United Kingdom and France against Syria today, a vote reflecting support for the allied air strikes on Syrian chemical sites.

The strikes were a response to an alleged chemical weapons attack carried out by Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime on April 7.

"We have a very high confidence that Syria was responsible and, once again, Russia's failure to stop them and their continued (lack of action) on this front has been part of the problem", White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said.

Russian Federation continues to dispute that the attack took place at all. Trump wrote on Twitter, raising the prospect that an attack might not be as imminent as he seemed to suggest the day before.

Syria's Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that Trump's threats to attack are "reckless" and endanger worldwide peace and security.

The Kremlin said a crisis communications link with the United States, created to avoid an accidental clash over Syria, was in use.

"We're still assessing the intelligence, ourselves and our allies", Mattis said.

When President Barack Obama failed to authorize strikes against Syria in 2013 to enforce his "red line" on chemical weapons use, he also sent a message of permission, critics have said, even if that incident resulted in a disarmament deal.

At the eye of the storm, Assad said any Western action "will contribute nothing but an increase in instability in the region, threatening worldwide peace and security", Syrian state television reported.

Turkey's foreign ministry said the airstrikes were "an appropriate response to the chemical attack". This is in contrast to an incident one year ago in which the US government had video and other evidence of certain aspects of an actual attack by Syrian aircraft, which involved the use of sarin gas. US officials have yet to determine precisely what was used, but suspect that a banned nerve agent like sarin was mixed with chlorine.

"His administration may have drafted a Russian Federation policy through the interagency process", said Michael A. McFaul, a former American ambassador to Russian Federation, "but Trump seems completely disconnected from it, like he seems to be on many foreign policies".

The United States communicated with Russia before launching strikes on Syria on Saturday to reduce the risk of killing Russian servicemen, US Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman said. "Get ready Russian Federation, because they will be coming, nice and new and 'smart!' You shouldn't be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it!"

Military officials must consider the response from Russian Federation, which has threatened to conduct counter-strikes against the United States and has positioned some of its most advanced weaponry, including the stealth SU-57 fighter, in Syria.

The United States would still welcome possible cooperation with Russia on Syria but wants Moscow to condemn alleged chemical attacks committed by Damascus, US Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman said.

"The immediate priority is to avert the danger of war", he told reporters.

"If there are problems, they must be solved at the negotiating table", she said.

It was not clear whether Trump and USA allies would wait for the results of the investigation before deciding on a strike.

At stake in Syria is the potential for confrontation, if not outright conflict, between the US and Russian Federation, former Cold War foes whose relations have deteriorated in recent years over Moscow's intervention in Ukraine, its interference in the 2016 USA presidential election and its support for Syrian President Bashar Assad.

He said he would also strive to prevent an escalation of conflict across the Middle East.
