Tesla Criticized for Blaming Autopilot Death on Driver

Tesla Criticized for Blaming Autopilot Death on Driver”

Huang died March 23 while driving Tesla's Model X on a highway near Mountain View, Calif., a city in the tech hub of Silicon Valley.

"In its statement, Tesla said, ".We chose to withdraw from the agreement and issued a statement to correct misleading claims that had been made about Autopilot - claims which made it seem as though Autopilot creates safety problems when the opposite is true".

Despite the troubles around the ramp-up of its Model 3 production, Tesla is already eyeing the launch of its next model, the Y, in November next year, two unnamed sources told Reuters. NTSB is expected to make a formal announcement in a release later Thursday, said the person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Tesla previously said that the electric car's autopilot function was activated seconds before the crash and blamed the incident on driver error in a March 30 blog post and a subsequent statement. It's also refused to comment on how many alerts can be ignored before the system disengages, what version of Autopilot software was in Huang's Model X, or when the vehicle was built.

The family's lawyer believes that the company is doubling down on putting the blame on Huang in order to distract from their concerns about his vehicle's Autopilot.

A Tesla representative told The Verge: "Among other things, they [the NTSB] repeatedly released partial bits of incomplete information to the media in violation of their own rules, at the same time that they were trying to prevent us from telling all the facts".

Although Tesla offered its condolences to Huang's family, it didn't mince its words when discussing the crash's cause.

Vetr cut shares of Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) from a buy rating to a hold rating in a report released on Wednesday morning.

A key question in an era of swiftly changing technology is whether companies will increasingly speak out on their own, particularly when they believe it is to their benefit to do so, or whether they will follow the protocol of NTSB investigations, which can take a year or more but are widely trusted. Tesla is extremely clear that Autopilot requires the driver to be alert and have hands on the wheel. Fortune Magazine alleged in July, 2016, that Tesla knew about another fatal accident before the company sold $2 billion in stock, triggering a probe from the Securities and Exchange Commission. However, Tesla will "continue to provide technical assistance to the NTSB", the spokesperson added. The company has also argued that the victim in the Model X crash is exclusively responsible for the accident, with the damaged highway divider to blame for its severity - not the Model X, which apparently steered itself into the concrete divider at highway speed.

When tested by NHTSA, Model S and Model X each received five stars not only overall but in every sub-category.

At issue is the NTSB's investigation into the fatal crash of a Tesla that was in Autopilot mode.

Tesla blames Huang, saying he knew that Autopilot was not ideal and he had told them it was not reliable in that exact location, but used Autopilot in that spot anyway. In 2009, the NTSB revoked the party status of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association in the investigation of a midair collision over the Hudson River.

This figure sounds ambitious even by Tesla's standards.
