Synthetic Cannabinoids pose great health risks

Synthetic Cannabinoids pose great health risks”

The substance is often referred to as Spice, K2 or fake weed.

Two of the deaths were men in their 20's; the third was a man in his 40's.

The cases have required hospitalization for symptoms, including coughing up blood, having blood in urine, and experiencing severe bloody noses and bleeding gums.

Officials say numerous samples have tested positive for brodifacoum; a lethal anticoagulant often used in rat poison.

"We continue to see the number of cases rise", Dr. Nirav Shah, director of the state's Department of Public Health, said in the statement.

Public health officials have said the product is not safe, and urge that if anyone has purchased it they shouldn't use it.

Their state health department reports that at least 9-5 people statewide are becoming sick since early March soon after eating synthetic bud. This makes synthetic marijuana both extremely unpredictable and risky.

The information from the state health department said synthetic cannabis products are human-made and described them as "mind-altering chemicals" that are sprayed onto dried plant material.

"Overdose deaths have been attributed to the abuse of synthetic cannabinoids, including death by heart attack", according to the website of the Drug Enforcement Agency. They're called cannabinoids because their chemicals are similar to what can be found in a real marijuana plant. However, the drugs are often combined with other substances that people may not know about or intend to consume, some of them highly unsafe.

Lisa Slater of the McLean County Health Department, Andrea Ingwersen of Woodford County and Sara Sparkman of Tazewell County confirmed their counties' numbers of cases.

The CDC has concurred that the use of synthetic cannabinoids can lead to serious illness or death.

Federal officials say the synthetic cannabinoids were packaged in sealed containers and labeled with such names as "Matrix", "Blue Giant" and "Crazy Monkey". But if anyone does have a bad reaction, like severe bleeding, they should call 911 or have someone take them to the hospital immediately.
