Mark Zuckerberg testimony: Everything to know before you watch

Mark Zuckerberg testimony: Everything to know before you watch”

The company is facing the worst privacy crisis in its 14-year history after whistleblowers revealed that the personal information of tens of millions users, mainly in the USA, was obtained by political consultancy firm Cambridge Analytica. In case a user's profile was obtained by Cambridge Analytica, the notification will tell him/her how Facebook has banned a site called "This Is Your Digital Life", as it shared the user's data without his/her consent with Cambridge Analytica. On Monday, the Energy and Commerce Committee published Mark Zuckerberg's prepared remarks, ahead of his appearance before the committee on Wednesday.

Facebook's latest estimate of the number of people whose personal information might have been collected by Cambridge Analytica is 87 million, but the company has stressed that the real number could be different.

The world's largest social network company founder will appear before a joint hearing of the Senate Commerce and Judiciary Committees. "That goes for fake news, foreign interference in elections, and hate speech", Zuckerberg said.

After 14 years of touting Facebook as a tool to bring people together, Zuckerberg is scheduled to tell the Senate and House committees this week that the website caused a whole lot of harm in doing so.

San Francisco: Battered by media reports that it secretly deleted CEO Mark Zuckerberg's posts from his recipients' inboxes, Facebook is now planning to make its Unsend feature available to its over two billion users in coming months.

Zuckerberg will get a second dose of questioning on Wednesday from the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Mark Zuckerberg is ready to apologise.

Facebook has said that as many as 146 million people may have received information from a Russian agency that's accused of orchestrating much of the cyber meddling in the election. "The customers are not the people using Facebook".

A Facebook official confirmed that the company had hired a team from the law firm WilmerHale and outside consultants to help prepare Zuckerberg for his testimony and how lawmakers may question him.

Mr Zuckerberg said Facebook came up with the 87 million figure by calculating the maximum number of friends that users could have had while Mr Kogan's app was collecting data. Cambridge Analytica has reported ties to the Trump presidential campaign and "Leave" vote in the Brexit referendum.

"I don't want anyone to use our tools to undermine democracy", Zuckerberg wrote in his testimony. The bottom line here is: "if Facebook can't fix its privacy problems, then how can Americans trust them to be caretakers of their sensitive information?"

Beginning at noon Eastern time on Monday, users should start seeing one of two messages at the top of their Facebook feed with the header "Protecting Your Information".

The changes announced by Facebook and Google restricting third-party access "indicate a higher likelihood that both companies will "raise their walls" ..." The CEO recounts the various investigations and updates Facebook had undertaken in recent weeks, following the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Any research can then be shared with the public without Facebook's permission.

"And when we address these challenges, I know well look back and view helping people connect and giving more people a voice as a positive force in the world", Zuckerberg said.

Zeynep Tufekci from University of North Carolina apprehended that the testimony just turns into congressional spectacle, that lawmakers yell at Zuckerberg.
