Trump Declines White House Correspondents' Dinner Invitation

Trump Declines White House Correspondents' Dinner Invitation”

"Nerd Prom" is coming back to Washington at the end of the month, and that has prompted a lot of speculation about whether the president would attend this time or skip out like a year ago.

"I sort of feel that the press is so bad", Trump said. "In many cases they literally make up sources".

This year, the dinner will honor Maggie Haberman of The New York Times, who Trump called "a Hillary flunky" who didn't know anything about him.

The organization said, though, that Trump "will actively encourage members of the executive branch to attend and join us as we celebrate the First Amendment".

The decision was unsurprising given Mr Trump's strained relationship with the media.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders will be attending the event and sitting at the head table.

Donald Trump attends the 101st Annual White House Correspondents' Association Dinner at the Washington Hilton on April 25th, 2015 in Washington, DC.

The event is typically a cozy mix of journalists and politicians, but during the first year of the Trump administration, it turned into an event for press freedoms.

Since taking up the presidency, Trump has strongly favoured news outlets that provide glowing coverage such as Fox News, The Daily Caller, Newsmax.

The dinners have historically featured a speeches from the president, offering a chance to practice self-deprecation or poke fun at their contemporaries, as well as professional comedians, who often set the presidents in their sites.

Last month, the President attended the exclusive Gridiron Club dinner, dining with a small group of top Washington reporters and cracking self-deprecating jokes. Pictured above is Trump at the White House on April 5, 2018.

Trump had said in an interview aired on Friday on NY radio station 77 WABC that he probably would not attend the dinner, which normally features big names from the worlds of politics and entertainment as guests of media organisations. "I'm very excited to come here and ruin your evening in person".
