Government's sugar tax comes into force

Government's sugar tax comes into force”

The sugar tax has come into effect in the United Kingdom on Friday in an attempt to curb rising levels of obesity.

Labor's position is similar, while the Greens have endorsed a 20 percent increase on sugar-sweetened drinks as part of a broader obesity prevention strategy. Nearly a third (31pc) report being unsure of which food and drink items are actually high in sugar.

The money will help fund healthy school breakfast clubs and be reinvested in sport in schools.

Clark wants the government to introduce further measures, including reducing sugar, salt, and fat levels in everyday foods, ending price promotions for unhealthy food and drink, and restricting junk food ads on TV before 9pm.

The government believes the levy will cut obesity rates and generate in excess of £240m in revenue for the exchequer in the new tax year.

Therefore, implementation of a price variation for customers, between full and reduced sugar offerings, would be a smart business move for many operators across the hospitality industry, and goes hand-in-hand with the rising trend of healthier food and drink choices by consumers.

"Taxes on consumer goods are always regressive, in that people on lower income generally pay more as a proportion of their income".

The sugar tax adds 18p per litre on drinks that have a total sugar content of 5-8g per 100ml - a sugar content of 5-8%.

The new levy will not be paid on milk-based drinks and fruit juices. The likes of Lucozade, Ribena and Irn-Bru have already changed their recipes so that they fall outside of the taxable thresholds.

"It's upsetting to see so many children admitted to hospital with tooth decay, but swapping out sugary drinks could be an easy win for busy families", said Dr Sandra White, dental lead for Public Health England.

'As that has happened, obesity rates have continued to rise'.

But more than 50% of manufacturers have changed their formulas to cut sugar, according to figures last month from the Treasury.

Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard, chair of the Royal College of Global Positioning System, said: "A tax on sugary drinks is a positive move forward in tackling this obesity epidemic".

But the recent National Diet and Nutrition Survey showed under-11s consume more than three times these limits - 14 teaspoons or 54g a day - with 15 per cent coming from soft drinks.
