Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Al Iaquinta Now Headlines UFC 223 in Brooklyn

Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Al Iaquinta Now Headlines UFC 223 in Brooklyn”

After Tony Ferguson had to withdraw from the headlining fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov, due to injury, featherweight champion Max Holloway was named his replacement for the lightweight title.

UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway agreed to the short-notice fight but faced the toughest weight cut of his life.

A day before UFC 223 hits Barclays Center on Saturday night (April 7), one of the headliners has been pulled again.

Because Iaquinta came in at 155.2 pounds, he will not be eligible to win the title should he be victorious in the main event fight.

Just when you thought this would be a feel good story with the NY lightweight, who was previously on the outs with the promotion, getting to fight for gold, another snag: Iaquinta had weighed in at 155.2lbs early Friday, perfectly legal for his bout with Paul Felder.

Iaquinta, who was scheduled to fight Paul Felder, got the nod. Iaquinta is ranked higher than Felder and Pettis in the UFC's official lightweight rankings.

Anthony Pettis was originally due to fight Michael Chiesa but Conor McGregor's antics caused injury to Chisea and the cancellation of three bouts.

Nurmagomedov (25-0) successfully made championship weight on Friday.

What are your thoughts on the entire saga of what has just been the leadup to the actual event taking place tomorrow night in Brooklyn, New York? If Pettis is indeed Nurmagomedov's opponent, Helwani says it would be a three-round bout.

"Dana White now says at press conference Al Iaquinta WILL be the lightweight champion if he wins".

Pettis weighed in at 155.2lbs but NYSAC regulations allowed him two hours to shed the excess.2lbs if he was interested in fighting for the title. The fight between Ray Borg and Brandon Moreno was canceled from the FS1 prelims because Borg suffered corneal abrasions during the incident.

Holloway is reported to have been keen to continue cutting weight for the fight, but doctor's overseeing him decided that it was not safe for him to do so and signalled that he would not be able to compete.

Information from ESPN's Brett Okamoto was used in this report.
