German court says Carles Puigdemont can be released on bail

German court says Carles Puigdemont can be released on bail”

Puigdemont's German lawyer said the separatist politician was arranging the transfer of the bail money to Germany.

However, the court disagreed Thursday, saying Puigdemont can't be extradited for rebellion.

In a heavy blow to the Spanish government, the court in northern Germany ruled that the main charge of rebellion against Puigdemont could not be used as grounds for extradition, since the comparable German charge of treason specifies violence.

But the German court said it would only permit Mr. Puigdemont's extradition on the lesser charges of misuse of public funds and not for Spain's more serious charge of rebellion against the state.

"That is not the case here", the court said in a statement.

The Spanish government was not immediately able to comment.

The German court set bail at 75,000 euros ($92,000).

Spain accuses the Catalan separatist of rebellion and corruption after he organised an unsanctioned independence referendum. Puigdemont was imprisoned in Neumünster after being arrested at his entry to Germany through the border with Denmark, following an order given by the court of that city to keep him in prison and avoid his escape.

Sanchez said in a letter from a Madrid jail published Thursday that he was ready to try again to be elected.

Earlier Thursday, the Spanish National Court charged the former head of Catalonia's regional police and other regional security officials with sedition over their role in events leading to the banned referendum on independence.

Former Catalan police Chief Josep Lluis Trapero was indicted today by Judge Carmen Lamela of the Spanish national court for his involvement in the independence movement. But he then came under severe pressure when Spanish national authorities asked his regional police force to help prevent the October 1 referendum, which triggered Spain's worst political crisis in decades.
