Bollywood star Salman Khan guilty of poaching

Bollywood star Salman Khan guilty of poaching”

Khan was convicted under Sections 9 and 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act, under which the maximum punishment is six years imprisonment.

The 52-year-old actor allegedly shot two blackbucks in Bhagoda ki Dhani in Kankani village near Jodhpur during the shooting of "Hum Saath Saath Hain".

Indian media reports suggest it could take days for Khan's legal team to apply for bail and appeal the conviction over the 20-year-old case which threatens to derail his illustrious career.

However, today's a day of justice because Salman Khan has finally been convicted to 5 years of jail for Blackbuck poaching.

Anand Desai, a lawyer for Khan, said in a statement that his client has applied for an urgent hearing to the case in a higher court, which will be heard Friday morning.

Four other actors who accompanied Salman during the hunt were acquitted of all charges.

"They are praying for probation, they are emphasising on the minimum sentence", he said.

Salman Khan is no doubt one of the biggest stars in India, he is known both at home and overseas.

The final arguments in the case were heard on March 28.

"We are studying the judgment - it just came as a surprise, as the entire investigation, and facts of this case were the same as those for which Salman has been acquitted by Hon'ble (Honorable) High Court of Rajasthan in two cases", he said.

This is his fourth stint in the Jodhpur Central Jail. The community has pursued the case against Khan for nearly two decades and cheered the decision by setting off firecrackers near the courthouse and handing out candies.

Interestingly, Salman's star has not dimmed despite his many brushes with the law.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature listed it as a "near threatened" species in 2013 and it is protected under the India's Wildlife Act. Lots of money riding on him (Salman Khan).

Killing endangered antelope isn't the only time Salman has hit headlines.

In December 2015, Khan was acquitted of running over and killing five homeless people with his SUV in 2002 after the prosecution "failed to establish beyond reasonable doubt" that he was behind the wheel.
