Prince Philip Is Admitted to Hospital for Planned Surgery on His Hip

Prince Philip Is Admitted to Hospital for Planned Surgery on His Hip”

"The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London last night, as a precautionary measure, for treatment of an infection arising from a pre-existing condition", a Buckingham Palace spokesman said at the time.

Officials declined to provide additional details about the surgery and said "further updates will be issued when appropriate".

Prince Philip was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in central London on Tuesday for the planned surgery which took place the following day.

Most surgeons suspect the Duke is having a hip replacement operation - which is quite common for people of his age.

"If Prince Philip is in a condition to attend the Windsor Horse show on May 9, he will most likely be fit to attend the wedding ten days later", adds the journalist, saying these are "key fixtures" in the Duke's diary.

Philip also missed the Easter Sunday service at St George's Chapel, where his grandson Prince Harry is due to marry Meghan Markle next month.

And all the while he encouraged others to lead a sporting and active life, as president of the National Playing Fields Association, a patron of Outward Bound and through the establishment of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme.

He missed a number of family events, including Easter church service with the royal family.

The duke retired from official duties past year.

Philip has suffered from heart disease and other ailments in recent years. He is progressing satisfactorily at this early stage.

When it was announced past year that he would be retiring from official engagements, Buckingham Palace stressed that the decision was not health-related and he had the full support of the Queen.

Much of that activity has come to an end as age has taken its toll.

It is understood that the operation will require a general anaesthetic.

Modern artificial hip joints are created to last for at least 15 years, with the majority of recipients experiencing a significant reduction in pain and improvement in movement.

There will be physiotherapy exercises to do at home and crutches are needed for about four to six weeks.
