SpaceX launches reused rocket and spacecraft to International Space Station

SpaceX launches reused rocket and spacecraft to International Space Station”

"This is the second resupply mission for NASA where we're not only flying a flight-proven booster but we're also flying a Dragon that has already been to the International Space Station", Jensen said, per CBS News. The first flight with a refurbished rocket and cargo craft, CRS-13 - which launched on December 15, 2017 - was SpaceX's most recent cargo mission to the ISS.

"Every mission is looked at on a case-by-case basis", said Jessica Jensen, director of Dragon mission management for SpaceX, during a pre-launch conference at Kennedy Space Center.

"What's really neat about this is this is becoming the norm, and we like that".

Falcon 9 B1039 completed its fourteenth Cargo Dragon (CRS-14) launch with a dramatic, Falcon Heavy-esque hard impact into the Atlantic Ocean - as an expendable mission, its objective, in this case, was to gather data on Falcon 9's performance during extreme reentry conditions. Falcon 9's first stage previously supported the CRS-12 mission in August 2017 and Dragon previously supported the CRS-8 mission in April 2016.

The launch marked the third time SpaceX launched a reused Dragon capsule, and the second NASA mission to use a previously-flown first stage.

The SpaceX Dragon spacecraft launched last night (Monday 2 April) from Florida on a Falcon 9 rocket carrying cargo that showcases the ingenuity of the United Kingdom space sector. Kanai and Tingle will capture the Dragon at approximately 7 a.m. EDT (1100 GMT) Wednesday, if all goes according to plan.

A few minutes after takeoff, the first stage engines cut off, having carried Dragon out of the Earth's atmosphere.

NASA pays commercial partners like SpaceX to transport supplies to the station.

The Dragon will remain at the ISS until May, when the Expedition 56 crew will ship it back to Earth.

This flight will deliver scientific investigations including a study on severe thunderstorms on Earth, on the effects of microgravity on production of high-performance products from metal powders, and food growth in space. The experiment, called the Veggie Passive Orbital Nutrient Delivery System (Veggie PONDS), will test a machine that gives nutrients to lettuce and mizuna greens for harvest and consumption in orbit.
