Mark Zuckerberg Says Facebook Will Need 'A Few Years' To Fix”

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, engaged in damage control after the Cambridge Analytica scandal, isn't taking all the criticism lying down: He has hit back at recent comments made by Apple CEO Tim Cook. Still, Apple executives, including Steve Jobs, have criticized internet company advertising business models in the past.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in an interview with Vox published on Monday that users in Mynamar used the website's Messenger to incite violence and spread hate speech that led to reported "ethnic cleansing" of Rohingya Muslims.

To reach as many people as possible, he said, his company has to lean on an advertising model to make its product free.

Alexandr Kogan, a psychological researcher at Cambridge, constructed a Facebook-based personality profiling app that collected public information from users who elected to take the survey.

"The reality here is that if you want to build a service that helps connect everyone in the world, then there are a lot of people who can't afford to pay", he added.

Adam Mosseri, Facebook's vice president of product management, said in March that real-world violence could be one of the "most concerning and severe negative consequences of any platform". Amazon, for instance, isn't necessarily a more ethical company just because it charges you $99 a year to be a Prime member, instead of giving you access to services for free and handing advertisers a file of information about ads you're more likely to click on.

Facebook is under growing scrutiny about its privacy practices since revelations that millions' of users personal data may have been used, without their permission, by the political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica to guide Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.

The company started investing more in security at least a year ago, Zuckerberg said,"so if this is going to be a three-year process, then I think we're about a year in already".

"You can imagine some sort of structure, nearly like a Supreme Court, that is made up of independent folks who don't work for Facebook, who ultimately make the final judgment call on what should be acceptable speech", he said.

Last month it was revealed that a data firm, Cambridge Analytica had been using data collected on the social media site.

The governments notice to Facebook last week too sought information on user data breach and details of the measures that have been put in place to ensure safety and prevent misuse of personal data. Ezra Klein noted that there was no "quadrennial election for CEO of Facebook", which may lead to a lack of accountability for the company. What, you think because you're paying Apple that you're somehow in alignment with them?
