Boy found alive hours after plunging into drainage pipe

Boy found alive hours after plunging into drainage pipe”

Rescuers finally found Jesse after seeing images of handprints on a sewage pipe.

Jesse is described as alert and talking, and he was given a cellphone to call his family.

"Once we opened up one of these hatches to place another camera into, honestly to our surprise we were able to locate Jesse".

Scott said the sanitation crews played a major role in finding Jesse.

The other children immediately notified adults, who called 911, initiating a frantic and exhaustive 12-hour search of labyrinthine underground pipes using cameras propped on flotation devices.

They narrowed the search area further after noticing the hand markings on the closed-circuit camera feed from inside a pipe. "Right away, our team focused on that location".

About 2,400 feet (731 meters) of pipe had been inspected when rescuers found Jesse less than a mile from where he disappeared. The section of pipe was large enough for him to breathe and stand.

"The first thing they heard was 'Help!'" said Adel Hagekhalil, assistant general manager of the sanitation department.

Workers lowered a hose down to the boy and pulled him up. He was taken to a hospital for a full evaluation and to be reunited with his family.

Dominique Barraza, a family friend, said they tried to send text messages and called his cell phone.

The mayor's crisis response team had been at the command post overnight and thanked the Hernandez family for its support, patience and optimism.

Jesse was playing with relatives in the maintenance building when he jumped on a wooden plank and fell 25 feet into the pipe system. More than 100 firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department were on scene at 5254 West Zoo Dr.in Hollywood around 4:30 p.m. after witnesses reported the fall.

"The expertise of the Bureau of Sanitation was instrumental in this search", Stewart said. "They wanted to bring Jesse back to his family".

"It's sad that this happens to him because he just came to the park to have fun", he said. Rescuers fanned out to sites where the sewage system drains and searched chambers where Jesse may have gotten trapped.

Los Angeles Police Sgt. Bruno La Hoz said that the system was a giant maze and admitted they were not sure where the drain pipe leads.

Erik Scott told reporters at 5:41 a.m.

Cameras used to inspect pipes for fix were used to float at the top of the pipe and crawl along the bottom, Scott said.
