Gregg Popovich indicates confusion, disconnect between Kawhi Leonard's 'group' and the Spurs”

BC-BKN-Spurs-Leonard, 361Popovich, Spurs unsure when Leonard will be cleared to playSpurs coach Gregg Popovich said Kawhi Leonard is continuing his injury rehabilitation in NY with his own team of doctors, but is unsure when the star forward and "his group" will clear him to play.

"He's trying to get well", Popovich added. The first time came ahead of the February All-Star break, where he spent three weeks nursing his quad injury.

Leonard is now in NY undergoing further evaluation and rehab on his quad, which has limited him to just nine games this season.

San Antonio Spurs star forward Kawhi Leonard.

Leonard has worked out at the NBA Players Association facility in Manhattan during both of his stays in NY. Earlier reports indicated that Leonard has been cleared medically by the Spurs, and that the onus is on him to decide when he's comfortable to take the court again.

"I don't know when he's going to feel, he and his group are going to feel like they're ready to go", Spurs coach Gregg Popovich told reporters Monday AEDT. "If I knew, he'd be here". Leonard has been in the care of his own medical team since then, and no timetable has been set for his return. "When he and his group feel he's ready, then he'll be ready". The playoffs are an open question, assuming the Spurs make it in. "Of course that's the objective [of his stay in New York], to get well, that's what he's doing".

After briefly being out of the playoff race, San Antonio is now the fourth spot (44-32) in the Western Conference following the winning streak.

Leonard is averaging 16.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists this season.

Added up, the playoffs are about to commence and San Antonio has no clue whether it will have the services of the two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year.
