Rock Valley baseball: Anfang, Drays aid Jefferson sweep

Rock Valley baseball: Anfang, Drays aid Jefferson sweep”

With spring break in effect for Jefferson County students, many local baseball and softball teams hit the road for some fun in the sun. Despite going 1-1 on the day, Goldstein was thrilled to start conference play on a good note and prove that their success down south wasn't a fluke.

The second game victory Saturday was the 250th win for the current Cumberland coaching staff, led by Keith Gorman. Previously, the fastest she reached 10 wins was past year on April 9.

On Friday, the team played a double header against Azusa Pacific University and Humboldt State University.

Alyssa Romary, Dallas Drakulich, Jessica Romero and Michelle Zehr added two hits apiece. Aubrey Ballou threw a five inning no hitter in the first game as she struck out six. While the Clan would lose the match, they took away Azusa's flawless game as smile-ending as possible, with a homerun from shortstop Taylor Lundrigan to lead off the final inning.

Grace Saunders pitched a complete game for the Raiders (1-0) and had eight strikeouts.

Not that the junior pitcher is flappable but grabbing an early lead against one of the best arms in Class 1A never hurts.

ROLLING HILLS PREP 15, CONTRERAS 1 Jake Hammond allowed one run on two hits in five innings to lead the Huskies (10-2) to the win in the Mid-City Classic.

The Raiders scored six runs in the sixth inning to finish off Lehman's season opener.

Tyler Frank provides power hitting for the Owls with seven home runs and is hitting.333.

WEST TORRANCE 10, CHRISTIAN 4; WEST TORRANCE 7, REDLANDS EAST VALLEY 3 The Warriors had their bats in tune during Friday's action, scoring 17 runs on 23 hits in their two games.

In game one, Gustavus registered it's only run in the first inning off of an RBI groundout by Webb.

St. Andrews got out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, but gave it all back and then some in the bottom of the first as Meredith scored five runs.

However, WPI came back again in the fifth inning on three runs, as the Lions failed to tie it up in the bottom half of the fifth inning. It's great to get these kinds of team coming over here. But not quite. A long rain delay in the bottom of the fifth inning took away the Clan's momentum.

Alvarado helped her own cause with a hit, two RBI and two runs. "They've really encouraged us to work hard at practice and prepared us for any game situation".

The game was called after Brewer (2-0) got a fly out to end the top of the third inning. Brown gave up one earned run each in the third and sixth innings.
