North Atlantic Treaty Organisation to announce 'measures' over United Kingdom poisoning: statement”

Stoltenberg says "we will continue to work for meaningful dialogue" with Russian Federation but the measure announced Tuesday "send a very clear message to Russian Federation that it has costs".

"And it follows Russia's lack of constructive response to what happened in Salisbury".

The Russian foreign ministry said: "This provocative gesture of notorious solidarity with London, made by countries that preferred to follow in London's footsteps without bothering to look into other circumstances of the incident, merely continues the policy of escalating the confrontation".

"Russia has the potential to be a partner with Europe". Moscow, though, has repeatedly denied involvement.

The worldwide expulsion of Russian diplomats followed that of 23 from the United Kingdom on March 14.

All in all, on Monday, about 100 Russian diplomats were expelled from 16 European countries, as well as US, Canada and Australia.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Washington of applying "colossal" pressure on allies to expel its diplomats, and vowed to respond to the move.

"Today's actions by our allies clearly demonstrate that we all stand shoulder to shoulder in sending the strongest signal to the Kremlin that Russian Federation can not continue to flout worldwide law and threaten our security".

In total, 16 European Union countries have expelled Russian diplomats.

"The attack in Salisbury was not just an attack against the United Kingdom but an affront to the global rules-based system on which we all depend for our security and wellbeing", Ireland's Foreign Ministry said.

British Prime Minister Theresa May on Tuesday told UK Parliament that 23 countries had expelled more than 115 Russian intelligence diplomats, which "represents an unprecedented series of expulsions that demonstrates to the Kremlin that we will not tolerate their attempts to flout worldwide law, undermine our values or threaten our security".

"Hence every responsible nation shares a vital interest in standing firm against him", he said.

"There was a time when this tactic of sowing doubt might have been effective, but no one is fooled any more".

The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) on Tuesday expelled seven officials from Russian mission in the aftermath of poisoning of former spy Sergei Skripal at his home in Britain's Salisbury.

This was the largest USA expulsion of Russian or Soviet agents ever and comes after Trump's predecessor Barack Obama expelled 35 in late 2016 over alleged election meddling.

Ryabkov said the USA move "will be met with a tough response" but he did not elaborate.
