Research shows lifestyle change can prevent thousands of cancer cases”

The research team says the new United Kingdom cancer rates have increased by 7% over the past decade which could be increased by about 2% every year.

The Daily Mail quoted Rachel Rawson, of Breast Cancer Care: "We can not turn a blind eye to the evidence that both being overweight and drinking alcohol increase the risk of developing breast cancer".

The research published in the British Journal of Cancer shows that obesity causes 13 different types of cancer, including bowel, breast, womb and kidney.

Obesity could overtake smoking as the chief avoidable cause of cancer-related deaths, the world's largest independent funder of cancer research said on Friday.

The team said they hoped the government would learn from "the success of measures such as advertising restrictions, tobacco taxes and standardised packaging in cutting smoking rates", and suggested that major brands should promote healthier options.

Nearly four in ten of all cancers could be avoided by switching to a healthier diet, doing more exercise and giving up smoking. 'We need to turn that tide around and we need to act quickly'.

Nearly two thirds of Britons are overweight or obese, which is up from half 25 years ago. I couldn't remember the last time I did any exercise.

But the number of cancer cases caused by smoking is falling as people kick the habit.

The fraction of cancer attributable to modifiable risk factors in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the United Kingdom in 2015 - found that smoking caused 32,200 cancers in men (17.7% of all male cancer cases) and 22,000 (12.4%) in women, making it the biggest preventable cause of the illness.

Rachel Rawson, of Breast Cancer Care, says: 'We can not turn a blind eye to the evidence that both being overweight and drinking alcohol increase the risk of developing breast cancer.

Research has revealed that nearly 2500 cases a week can be prevented if British people make simple changes in their lifestyle.

'Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the most important things you can do for your health'.
