Google News Initiative announced to fight fake news and support journalism

Google News Initiative announced to fight fake news and support journalism”

The technology company said Tuesday it will spend $392 million over the next three years on the initiative, which will involve prioritizing "quality" publishers, making it easier to subscribe to news publications and educating readers on how to spot misleading reports.

"It's becoming increasingly hard to distinguish what's true and what's not online".

Sauerberg said not all tech giants have put publishers at the top of their priority lists, but for now, "I feel really good we're at the top of the list for Apple and for Google".

Subscriptions. Google is adding a News Consumer Insights dashboard for publishers within Google Analytics, which will look at audience metrics with an eye towards getting them to pay for a subscription.

Schindler also announced a partnership with the Harvard Kennedy School's First Draft to launch something called the Disinfo Lab, which will "use computational tools and journalistic oversight to monitor misinformation during elections". So we've trained our systems to recognize these events and adjust our signals toward more authoritative content.

Google is launching a charm offensive on publishers with the debut of a "Google News Initiative".

Evolve business models to drive sustainable growth: The company is launching "Subscribe With Google", a way to let readers more easily subscribe to news content that is kept behind paywalls. But Google is also keen to continue working with the news industry to develop new tools and techniques to ensure the facts reach people.

Google has made a decision to get serious about cracking down on the spread of fake news and the algorithms that enable its platforms to circulate these untrustworthy sources.

Google's huge investment of $300 million is critical for the news industry. The New York Times, Financial Times, and The Washington Post are among the first publishers pioneering Subscribe with Google, and more will be coming soon.

In October, at our Partner Leadership Summit, we told publishers about how we're experimenting with ways to grow their subscriptions using Google data, machine learning, and DoubleClick infrastructure. It won't affect typical Google Search results, the company has confirmed.

Google also announced Outline, an open-source tool which allows news organizations to set a up a corporate virtual private network (VPN) on their own server to safely connect to the internet and keep their communication private.

This is something Google has already talked about and tested, but the company is rolling out its Subscribe With Google feature to more publishers.

Several of Google's existing retail partners will ramp up their efforts to take advantage of Shopping Actions, including Walmart, Home Depot, Costco, Target and Ulta Beauty. "We'll be expanding that model globally".
