South Africa won 2nd Test at Port Elizabeth”

South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has regained the No 1 spot in the ICC's Test rankings for bowlers, following his match haul of 11 for 150 against Australia in Port Elizabeth, which helped South Africa level the series.

He was speaking after a man of the match performance in South Africa's six-wicket win in the second Test against Australia, but before the verdict from the International Cricket Council was announced.

After dismissing the Australian captain in the second innings, Rabada is seen celebrating vociferously as he walks past Smith, and their shoulders touch with the violent impact equivalent to Mike Tyson dropping a yellow rectangular dish-washing sponge on to the hide of a full-grown male rhinoceros.

Rabada already had five demerit points on his record, and the three-point penalty for the offence means he incurs an automatic two-match ban.

Rabada received a further 15 percent deduction of his match fee and an additional demerit point. For me they are not.

The thought has struck me with increasing conviction that the Aussie side presently touring our shores has a little sneakily gone out of its way, even if only with certain individuals most consciously involved, to goad known match-winning figure Rabada into stepping over the ICC-defined line of conduct. The contact (between Rabada and Smith) was very minimal, it was a shirt flick of two players and you would get one or two demerit points as a slap on the wrist because it wasn't full body contact.

Match referee Jeff Crowe said, "I found that there was contact between Rabada and Smith, and in my judgement the contact by Rabada was inappropriate, and deliberate".

"With the Stokes incident I didn't contest it because I knew I did it", he said.

For his part, Rabada said he would need to avoid getting into close proximity with opponents. "People talk about where Test cricket is going".

He was also charged separately for a Level 1 offence for giving a sendoff to Warner in the second innings, and he accepted that charge.

Australian captain Steve Smith still tops the ICC Test batting list.

Since February 2017, Rabada has fallen foul of the disciplinary system five times and been banned once before.

Cricket South Africa said it was seeking legal counsel about a possible appeal that could potentially make Rabada available for the next test in Cape Town, which starts on March 22.

Sharing his view on the matter, Du Plessis was quoted by as saying: "For me, the way KG plays the game, he is a competitive fast bowler".

It still bewilders me how up to seven or eight overs of a scheduled 90-overs day in the Test arena can just "go missing" to the paying public, often without any significant punitive and correctional measure involved.

"I would like to open", he said in January but added: "It's a bit tough at the moment because there's two very good bowlers in those roles".
