Roger Federer defies logic with backhand slice

Roger Federer defies logic with backhand slice”

Taro Daniel who's ranked 109th in the world knocked out former number one Novak Djokovic from the second round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

The defending champion came through, though, reaching a tie-break before his class told and it became apparent that the weather had only delayed the inevitable.

The New York-born Japanese went toe-to-toe with Djokovic in the long rallies, and would fire a down-the-line backhand every now and then that wowed the day session crowd.

Roger Federer insists he is taking nothing for granted after moving a step closer to a sixth Indian Wells title in California.

"It feels insane; I mean, I'm still in shock", said Anisimova, whose parents are Russian but who represents the United States, where she was born and raised.

Federer, who defeated Federico Delbonis in the second round, will next face Jeremy Chardy after the world No 100 overcame countryman Adrian Mannarino, world No 23, 7-5 4-6 6-1.

Federer - the defending champion and a five-time victor of this event - required less than an hour on Stadium 1 to get the better of the Serbian world number 28.

"I was grateful to be out on the court after surgery that quickly but at the same time just didn't feel good at all", he added.

"It felt like first match I ever played on the tour. And I was able to stay pretty tough, so I'm pretty proud of that".

Djokovic missed the last five months of the previous campaign to recover from his injury, but was unable to get back to his best despite months of rehabilitation.

"Everything. I mean, nerves were there".

The Indian Bhambri will meet 18th-seeded Sam Querrey in the third round after the big-serving American accounted for Germany's Mischa Zverev 6-4 7-5.

Daniel's third-round opponent is Argentina's Leonardo Mayer, who had been scheduled to play Japan's Kei Nishikori in the second round before the world No. 25 withdrew through illness.

The Swiss legend returned to stadium court on Sunday afternoon and needed an hour to close out his second-round victory 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).

Israeli Dudi Sela beat British 21st seed Edmund 6-4 6-4, while Luxemburg's 24th seed Giles Muller was upset by Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-3 7-5.
