Tensions high, arrests made at white nationalist's visit to Michigan

Tensions high, arrests made at white nationalist's visit to Michigan”

Spencer blamed the low attendance at his talk on the protests.

Though Spencer wasn't scheduled to speak until 4:30 p.m., counter-protesters began to accumulate in the Lot 89 parking lot on campus around noon.

Officers formed lines outside the Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education to funnel ticket holders into the auditorium for Spencer's speech, though the Detroit Press reports the audience was sparse due to the protest.

"The safety and security of our campus community remains our top priority", Monette said.

"That's why we're here", Monette said.

Fistfights broke out on a road leading to Michigan State University in East Lansing as about 40 backers of Spencer walked up a road leading to the campus, where roughly 500 demonstrators had gathered, surrounding an armoured police vehicle.

In an attempt to "minimize the risk of violence or disruption to campus", the settlement stipulated that the event take place at the pavilion on Monday, the first day of MSU's spring break.

"If it was during the school year, we would've had, like, probably a thousand people", Pillai said.

Against the backdrop of drumming and chanting, one protester was asked about being arrested as she was led to a police van. According to the organization's website, the NPI is "dedicated to the heritage, identity, and future of people of European descent in the United States and around the world".

Richard Spencer coined the term "alt-right, ' and popularized the idea of a future state exclusively for white people".

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors US hate groups, lists Spencer as "a radical white separatist whose goal is the establishment of a white ethno-state in North America".

To some protesters, Spencer's views are reminiscent of fascism.

But protesters, including those who demonstrated peacefully, said it was their duty to stand up to Spencer and his beliefs. Protestors tried to push the attendees back and threw water bottles, sticks, and other objects at them. Some say they were there because they wanted to show up against fascism. "So it was just kind of a joke and a play on words". The two side reached an agreement then to let Spencer speak. I came away from this conference thinking that Richard is a guy I wouldn't mind having a beer with.

One resident and MSU graduate said he attended Monday's protest to voice his concern over the appearance.

After a violent clashes erupted at a speaking event for white supremacist Richard Spencer at Michigan State University, police moved in to make arrests.
