Rohani Vows Women To Be Allowed In Iranian Stadiums, FIFA Chief Says”

Thirty five women arrested for trying to attend a football match in Iran on Thursday have all been released.

The Islamic Republic has long barred women from attending male soccer matches, based at least partly on the theory that women should not hear male fans swear and curse.

Another user said it was a "basic right" for women to enter stadiums with men, and said this match was "the best chance to break the 35-year-old taboo".

Iran said the women were not arrested but rather held temporarily and would be released after the match, the BBC reported. Before attending the match, Infantino met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

In a statement emailed to VOA Persian Friday, FIFA said it is "strongly committed to promoting the protection of human rights including especially the right of women to attend football matches".

The 100,000 capacity Azadi stadium in the Iranian capital was hosting the biggest annual fixture on the local football calendar - the derby between the two main Tehran teams, Esteghlal and Persepolis, which Esteghlal won.

It follows Saudi Arabia announcing it would lift a ban on women entering three sports stadiums in the country from 2018 in October previous year.

FIFA also said Infantino told Iranian President Rouhani that it is important for "all football fans irrespective of gender" to be allowed to cheer and support their favorite teams inside stadiums, especially in a country like Iran, where it said the "whole population is so passionate about football".

While Infantino did use the speech to tell Iran "much more can be done", that was in reference to the awarding of television rights.

"Starting the preparation of three stadiums in Riyadh, Jeddah and Damman to be ready to accommodate families from early 2018", the Saudi sports body said on Twitter.

It said Rouhani also referred to the "passionate presence of women in various fields of sport, especially football", noting that 23,000 Iranian women are registered as football players in the country. Safai is the founder of "Let Iranian women enter their stadiums", a campaign to end gender discrimination at Iranian sporting venues.

There were calls on social media before the match for women to protest against the ban outside the Azadi stadium today.

The group was spotted even though some of them were dressed as men.

"In a great country such as Iran, more can certainly be done", he said".

Responding to the Saudi mission's attack, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation later prohibited all Saudi clubs from playing against Iranian teams in Iran.
