Ester Ledecka adds gold in snowboard to gold on skis”

Gold medallist Czech Republic's Ester Ledecka celebrates on the podium during the victory ceremony for the women's snowboard parallel giant slalom event during the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympic Games on February 24, 2018.

"This is fantastic", she said. "It was something very special and I think I will think about this moment until the end of my life".

"My plan is to stay with my heart, so for now, I will do both because I love both", she said.

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea (AP) - When the book is closed on these Olympics - all Olympics, really - Ester Ledecka will have her own chapter.

Yet few had thought it was possible to successfully double up.

Ter Mors, 28, who also competed in the two sports at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, took up long-track skating as a cross-training exercise to improve her conditioning for short-track.

Ledecka has won Alpine snowboarding's overall World Cup title each of the past two seasons, and she is the reigning world champion in parallel giant slalom.

Her margin of victory in the final was much more comfortable than the.01-second edge in the super-G race that left her staring at the clock in shock. Another German, Romana Theresia Hofmeister, took bronze.

By winning gold in both snowboard and Alpine skiing, Ledecka has challenged the conventional wisdom regarding what is achievable, and she had a message for any youngsters who might wish to follow in her footsteps and aim for success on both skis and snowboard.

Against the Swedes, the U.S. broke a tie with a massive double-knockout in the eighth end, scoring five points to take a 10-5 lead, which effectively ended the game.

"I really enjoyed the race today. I felt like that".

But she confessed it had not been easy to deal with the pressure of having so many great expectations on her shoulders.

"After the super-G there was a lot of people congratulating, congratulating, congratulating". I'm like, "Whoa, so nice".

"I was thinking OK they're going to change the time, I'm going to wait for a little bit and they're going to switch and put some seconds on. As long as I have fun with both (skis and the snowboard) I will probably do both and we'll see what happens".

Ledecka started skiing aged two and snowboarding three years later. She said she became a serious skier at age 13 by default.

No one will argue with that decision now. Ester says she will continue to do both because she loves both sports and loves to do both. Her time on the faster of the two courses, 43.32 seconds, would've beaten seven of the men - almost one fourth of the field - over the same track. Though Friedrich is the driver, the brakeman Margis deserves recognition since they combined to have the four fastest start times in the entire two-man competition. "So no eating today", she joked.
