Parkland shooting survivor confronts Donald Trump on gun violence in schools”

A week after 17 people were killed at a Parkland, Fla., high school, President Trump hosted survivors, parents and teachers from that and other recent school shooting tragedies for an emotional, almost 90-minute listening session at the White House Wednesday.

"We are going to be very strong on background checks, and put a very strong emphasis on the mental health of somebody".

Lawmakers in several states are wrestling with the contentious idea, including Florida, where the 17 victims of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland are being mourned.

President Trump's listening session included students, parents and teachers from Columbine, Newtown and Parkland. "If you had a teacher who was adept at firearms, they could very well end the attack very quickly", he reasoned.

President Donald Trump suggested that teachers who carry concealed weapons in schools should receive bonuses during a meeting on school safety on Thursday. They're not going to walk into a school if 20% of the teachers have guns - it may be 10% or may be 40%.

"A gun-free zone to a maniac is, 'Let's go in and let's attack because bullets aren't coming back at us'".

In the meeting, Trump suggested arming teachers to deter mass shootings as he faced broken voices, tears and demands for action from the survivors. I want certain highly adept people - people that understand weaponry, guns. "This shouldn't happen", he said, demanding that politicians and leaders work to immediately secure schools around the country before tackling the heated, polarizing gun-violence issue. "Shot nine times on the third floor", Mr Pollack said. "9/11 happened once, and they fixed everything". "I hear you." That was number 5 on his list.

A photograph of Mr Trump's note card during his meeting with Florida shooting survivors have caused a stir on social media.

"Am I supposed to get extra training now to serve and protect?"

"I'm the biggest believer of the Second Amendment that there is - okay - I am the biggest", the President said.

He also disparaged school shooting drills, saying they were tough on the kids.

"I never said "give teachers guns" like was stated on Fake News @CNN & @nbc", he said. "They'll frankly feel more comfortable having the gun anyway".

"If you harden the sites you're not going to have this problem", the president said.
