Spotify looking for Operations Manager to build hardware team”

Apple's recent entry HomePod notably omitted Spotify functionality, and the biggest speakers on the market are created by Amazon and Google - both of whom have their own streaming services and music stores.

The Swedish music-streaming giant, which is now preparing to become a public company, has posted a trio of hardware-focused job advertisements on its website, as first reported by the Guardian earlier today.

Spotify's latest job openings prove that the company is looking to expand further on its options for users.

As discovered by MusicAlly, one of the job listings states that Spotify is "on its way to creating its first physical products", and that the company is now trying to set up an operational organization for all aspects of manufacturing and production, including supply chain, sales, and others.

Spotify's previous job listings for those positions clearly stated that successful candidates would lead the company's efforts to deliver a "category-defining product akin to Pebble Watch, Amazon Echo, and Snap Spectacles" directly to existing and new customers. Job ads suggest that Spotify is planning to enter production with its own speaker. Creating its own dedicated streaming devices could help Spotify to protect itself from the centralisation of smart home platforms.

It seems likely that Spotify's speaker will, like HomePod, be very music-focused, making it potentially more of a direct competitor. This means that users won't be able to ask Siri to play music from Spotify.

The fight for music streaming supremacy is mostly between Spotify and Pandora, the two largest services available in the United States.

It's also worth pointing out that Spotify now has over 70 million worldwide subscribers.
