Kratom linked to Salmonella outbreak; CDC posts warning”

The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) declared that a novel outburst of Salmonella hitched to Kratom. Some consumers have hailed the drug as a "natural" pain remedy, but some medical experts say it can be risky, even deadly.

A total of 28 people from 20 states have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella I 4, [5], 12:b:-; 11 hospitalizations have been reported.

'At this time, CDC recommends that people not consume kratom in any form because it could be contaminated with salmonella, ' the agency warned.

The CDC's announcement comes two weeks after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration released detailed information about 36 people who died after taking kratom and declared that the product likely contains opioids.

Here's what health officials know so far, and what you need to keep in mind.

The regulator said it is recalling all kratom-containing dietary supplements distributed under the brand names Botany Bay, Enhance Your Life and Divinity.

Last week, the FDA released findings showing kratom acts like an opioid and can be unsafe and addictive.

The FDA is also involved in the outbreak investigation, according to the agency's website. Herbal products are attaining popularity in the US. Native to Malaysia, the leaves of the kratom plant are known for their opiate-like effects.

Kratom is said to help ease opioid withdrawal, but is sometimes used recreationally.

On Feb. 6, the FDA reported that the kratom products have been linked with 44 deaths; these deaths, however, often involved other substances besides kratom.

"I want to be clear on one fact: there are now no FDA-approved therapeutic uses of kratom", Gottlieb said. When ingested, the drug taps into some of the same brain receptors as opioid painkillers- a finding that prompted the Food and Drug Administration to classify it as an opioid earlier this month. Kratom is likewise called Thang, Kakuam, Thom, Ketom and Biak.

A plant grown in parts of Asia, kratom has been marketed as a treatment for pain, anxiety, and depression.
