Attorney Pleads Guilty to Lying to Mueller Investigators”

It stems from the special counsel's investigation into a covert Washington lobbying campaign Manafort and Gates are accused of directing on behalf of pro-Russian Ukrainian interests.

Special counsel Robert Mueller has filed a new charge against an attorney accused of lying to investigators in the Russian Federation investigation. In reality he spoke with both Gates and "Person A" in September 2016 and secretly recorded the calls, the information says.

Gates is expected to plead guilty to money laundering and other charges in the probe.

Manafort also had his share of financial entanglements with entities related to Russian Federation when he joined the Trump campaign.

The lawyer also allegedly lied about his talks with someone else, referred to by the government as "Person A".

Mueller is investigating Russian election interference and links between the Trump campaign and Russia. Mueller already has secured guilty pleas from former national security adviser Michael Flynn and one-time foreign affairs adviser George Papadopoulos for lying to investigators about their contacts with Russian Federation.

Van Der Zwaan's father-in-law, Khan, is named in former British spy Christopher Steele's dossier in a section that deals exclusively with Alfa Bank and its relationship to Putin.

Last year, he married the art critic Eva Khan, whose father German Khan co-founded the Alfa Group, one of Russia's largest investment groups. A spokesman for Khan didn't immediately provide a comment.

One day after its release, a State Department official called it "incomplete", saying that it "doesn't give an accurate picture" and that the State Department was concerned that "Skadden Arps lawyers were obviously not going to find political motivation if they weren't looking for it". CNN reported previous year that the Federal Bureau of Investigation examined whether there was a computer server connection during the 2016 presidential campaign between Alfa Bank and the Trump Organization, though there isn't any indication that van der Zwaan is connected to that matter.

Van der Zwaan was accused of misleading investigators about his work for a law firm that Ukraine's Ministry of Justice hired to put together a report about the trial of the former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. Unlike a line pushed by the US and European Union at the time, the report argued that Tymoshenko's trial was not politically motivated.

He was also accused of lying to Federal Bureau of Investigation and special counsel investigators about his last conversation with Gates, in mid-August 2016. CNN reported last week that Gates has been in plea negotiations with the special counsel for about a month.

Alex van der Zwaan, a 33-year-old Dutch citizen, said he also lied to investigators about his failure to turn over email communications to the special counsel's office and to his law firm as it cooperated with Mueller on its investigation of Manafort and Gates' foreign lobbying.

A Skadden spokeswoman said in an email that the firm fired van der Zwaan in 2017, and has been cooperating with authorities in connection with the matter.

Skadden produced a report in 2012 that displayed a defiant view of the prosecution and conviction of Tymoshenko. Next year, the firm received $1 million from Ukraine, though no further work was done. Yanukovych, who fled the country in 2014, has been accused of extraordinary corruption while in office and had locked up rival Timoshenko on charges widely considered to be false.
