Freezing rain expected to make Monday morning hard

Freezing rain expected to make Monday morning hard”

Rain and drizzle will linger through early Tuesday morning.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for areas north of Dane County until 3 p.m. Tuesday.

We could see a return of freezing rain Thursday night, possibly mixed with sleet and snow, but the Weather Service said less than a tenth of an inch of ice and less than a half-inch of sleet and snow is expected.

Colder air will infiltrate from the north, allowing for freezing rain to develop in our northern areas during the afternoon and central sections in the evening through overnight.

Wednesday will be quiet and sunny as temperatures try to warm to near freezing. As such, I've maintained a chance of rain on Friday and kept 10% in the forecast to account for anything slow to exit the area early on Saturday.

Southwest Airlines have canceled almost all flights before 1 p.m. Tuesday, and American and United have canceled some as well. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 25. Most of the precipitation will move out by 7 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Tonight, the low will be 18, according to the weather service.

Saturday's low in Madison was 14 at 2:56 a.m., 2 degrees below the normal low and 30 degrees above the record low of 16 below for February 17, set in 1973.

"Farther south, up to 2" of rain will fall causing flooding concerns for low-lying areas and along waterways. The beneficial rain could total as much as 5 inches by the start of next week, which would significantly help the drought.
