Russian opposition leader Navalny says access to his website being blocked”

Russia wants videos on YouTube and Instagram showing a senior government official cavorting on a yacht with an oligarch once close to Russian President Vladimir Putin taken down, leaving both companies scrambling to respond.

Russia's telecommunications regulator said it had ordered service providers to block access to the website of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, whose team dug up Instagram posts that showed metals magnate Oleg Deripaska and deputy prime minister Sergey Prikhodko socializing on a yacht in Norway.

In the 2000s, Deripaska was barred from entering the United States after the State Department raised questions about possible connections to Russian organised crime groups.

It said Instagram had complied with a similar request to take down related material and that it was waiting for Google to delete a YouTube video.

Navalny quoted public records suggesting that Prikhodko spent several days on the yacht and was flown there by Deripaska's private jet.

"Roskomnadzor has begun blocking on Deripaska's demand".

Deripaska, in a statement last week, accused Navalny and others of spreading lies about him and was reported to have obtained a court order in southern Russian Federation to have the offending material removed. "It still opens via some providers, but that is temporary", Navalny tweeted on Thursday.

Navalny says Rybka - whose real name is Anastasiya Vashukevich, according to the Guardian - claimed in a book she published to have met Deripaska and other oligarchs while working as an escort.

Footage of the billionaire sailing on a yacht with deputy prime minister Sergei Prikhodko, where it is claimed bribes were exchanged, is now online.

A member of Navalny's team posted a screen shot of a message the team allegedly received from YouTube and Google, demanding that he take down one of the videos where he discusses the allegedly corrupt dealings.

She has more than 60,000 followers on Instagram where she has posted scantily-clad or naked snaps of herself and a video of herself having sex.

"Mr Deripaska's claim is to protect his right to privacy, and has nothing to do with any political struggle between Mr Navalny and his political opponents", a spokesperson for the oligarch said in a written statement to AFP following news of the site being blocked. He tweeted that both sites were up and running in Russian Federation, but could be shut down Wednesday night.
