Three Britons killed in helicopter crash at the Grand Canyon

Three Britons killed in helicopter crash at the Grand Canyon”

A tourist helicopter has crashed in the Grand Canyon in Arizona, United States, killing three people and injuring another four.

Three people were killed in the crash of a tour helicopter in the Grand Canyon. FAA spokesman Allen Kenitzer said the Eurocopter EC130 crashed "under unknown circumstances" and suffered substantial damage.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: 'We are providing support to the families of six British visitors involved in a helicopter accident at the Grand Canyon on 10 February, and we are in close contact with the U.S. emergency services'.

Papillon Group CEO Brenda Halvorson said in a statement Sunday that the company is extending its heartfelt sympathy to the families involved in the accident.

Authorities say four people injured in the crash of a tour helicopter have been airlifted to a Nevada hospital and crews now are recovering the bodies of the other three people aboard who died.

"We had one victim who received severe burns", said Chief Francis E. Bradley, Sr., Hualapai Nation Police Department.

Tours from the Grand Canyon West Rim range from £150 to £220. "In the gulch, there was a helicopter, flames, smoke", he said.

Records from the National Transportation Safety Board show that Papillon had a fatal helicopter crash on August 10, 2001, that took the lives of the pilot and five passengers. The carrier flies about 600,000 passengers a year on Grand Canyon and other tours, its website notes.

Rescuers got an assist from military aircraft from Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas and were in the process of evacuating the injured overnight, Bradley said.

The pilot and five tourists from NY were killed, while one woman survived. He said the company has made big improvements since that crash.

The helicopter was owned by Papillon Airways, a sightseeing company that specializes in helicopter tours of the canyon.

Papillon said it is cooperating with the investigation and abides by flight safety rules that exceed those required by the FAA.
