The most distant photo ever taken

The most distant photo ever taken”

The images for "Pale Blue Dot" - part of a composite - were taken 3.75 billion miles (6.06 billion kilometers) away. On December 5th of past year, it woke up and took a routine image of a star cluster called the Wishing Well to calibrate its camera, the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI).

NASA's New Horizons spacecraft captured these images at a distance of 3.79 billion miles from Earth - the farthest from our planet an image has ever been made.

New Horizons is headed toward a KBO dubbed 2014 MU69, one of more than 20 far-off chunks of rock and ice NASA hopes to observe during the spacecraft's mission. The false-color images of two of the observed objects - 2012 HZ84 and 2012 HE85 - are the farthest from Earth ever captured by a spacecraft.

'New Horizons has always been a mission of firsts - first to explore Pluto, first to explore the Kuiper Belt, fastest spacecraft ever launched, ' said New Horizons Principal Investigator Alan Stern, of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado. These efforts could reveal much about the formation and evolution of the Solar System, and are setting records that are not likely to be broken for many more decades! Voyager 1's achievement lasted as long as it did because the mission crew shut off the camera shortly after capturing the Pale Blue Dot image.

This leaves the exploration up to New Horizons.

This image, taken by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft on December 5, 2017, shows the Kuiper Belt object 2012 HZ84.

The probe then turned its attention to the distant Kuiper Belt. At present, the New Horizons spacecraft is in hibernation and will be brought back online on June 4th, - when it will begin a series of checks to make sure it is ready for its planned encounter with MU69.

Getting the images to Earth is no easy task.

In so doing, they also broke a record that had stood untouched since 1990, when the Voyager 1 spacecraft sent back a final glimpse of Earth before its cameras went dark. These images once again broke the record for being the most distant images taken from Earth (again), but also set a new record for the closest-ever images ever taken of KBOs.

According to the press release, New Horizons is now back in hibernation mode and will reawaken on June 4 to begin preparations for a January 1, 2019 rendezvous with 2014 MU69, which is almost a billion miles beyond Pluto.

New Horizons snapped these two farthest-out shots, of Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs) 2012 HZ84 and 2012 HE85, on December 5, 2017.
