43 defective engines installed on 32 Airbus 320 (neo) aircraft: P&W

43 defective engines installed on 32 Airbus 320 (neo) aircraft: P&W”

"Airbus and Pratt are working in close cooperation and will be swiftly communicating on the way forward to regain normal operations and resume aircraft deliveries".

The problem could become much bigger if the engine supplier cannot find a quick fix, as the delivery schedule of future A320neo aircraft will likely be seriously affected in that case. "As soon as IndiGo learnt of these developments, IndiGo had proactively withdrawn the three A320neo aircraft from service w.e.f. 9th of February", the airline had said in a statement on Saturday.

Airlines with A320neos that have the affected engines will have to ground some of their planes, the Journal said. "The current population of impacted engines is 43 engines installed on 32 aircraft, of which 21 aircraft have one engine with the modified configuration, and 11 aircraft have two engines with that configuration". But Airbus has still parked around 30 otherwise completed aircraft at its manufacturing sites in Toulouse and Hamburg awaiting engines.

The engine issue has been linked to "several" reports of "in-flight shutdown", European officials say.

The problem stems from a component in the engine that can show early signs of wear, and it's located in an area that must withstand high pressure, an Airbus spokesperson said.

Airbus said 113 of the jets at 18 airlines use the Pratt geared turbofan engine, but not all are affected. The Farmington conglomerate, which also makes aerospace parts, elevators and building systems equipment, has touted the engine as quieter and more fuel-efficient than those produced by competitors.

This problem follows a series of performance issues related to the engine's combustion chamber and carbon seal for one of the bearings witnessed for the said model over the last two years, during which, according to the civil aviation ministry, there were 69 engine removals and replacements for 23 aircraft operated by IndiGo, which is the largest A320neo customer for Airbus in the world.

If one engine fails, a twin engine aircraft can safely land with the other operative engine.

"Our precautionary measure of grounding the three aircraft resulted in cancellations of some of our flights". All are from the most recent batches to come off the engine-maker's production line, Bloomberg reported.

The product safety boards of Pratt & Whitney and Airbus have decided that "all neo deliveries are postponed till further notice", IndiGo spokesman Ajay Jasra reportedly said.
