SNAP program would be replaced with meal kits, according to Trump proposal

SNAP program would be replaced with meal kits, according to Trump proposal”

"What we do is propose that, for folks who are on food stamps - part, not all - part of their benefits come in the actual sort of - and I don't want to steal somebody's copyright - but a Blue Apron-type program where you actually receive the food instead of receiving the cash", Mulvaney said.

Now, the Trump administration says it wants to create a new program, dubbed America's Harvest Box, which would replace about half the money families receive through the SNAP program. The people affected are households that receive at least $90 a month in assistance, or 81 percent of all Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients.

It's a completely false and dishonest correlation, to compare a box of what would consist of "shelf-stable milk, juice, grains, cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned meat, fruits and vegetables", according to the USDA, to the fresh, organic ingredients offered by Blue Apron. The Chicago Tribune notes SNAP provides roughly $125 per month to 42.2 million Americans, and the Agriculture Department would use part of those benefits to buy and deliver boxes of "homegrown" food.

According to the USDA the proposal would save nearly $130 billion over the next ten years but it could become a costly move for the food bank. The budget proposal does not include any funding for distributing the boxes. "These budget proposals for SNAP are the wrong way to go to provide healthy, safe, affordable food for all". So instead of giving families food stamps, Trump and his administration will seek to give food boxes. "We are committed to maintaining a strong safety net", they said, "for agricultural producers during these times of low prices and uncertain markets and continuing to improve our nation's nutrition programs".

Tuesday was distribution day at the 6th street shelter food bank.

The plan is said to save the government money and provide families with more nutritious options than what the food stamps now provide.

She continued: "Perhaps this proposal would save money in one account, but based on our decades of experience in the program, it would increase costs in other areas that would negate any savings".

But America's Harvest Box, which USDA contends would save over $129 billion over 10 years, is not very comparable to startup meal-delivery companies like Blue Apron.

"It's a risky scheme that threatens families' ability to put food on the table", said Stacy Dean, vice president for food assistance policy at the left-leaning Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. We know SNAP works now, when people can choose what they need. However, Trump will ultimately be the person who takes away their food and health care benefits.

Indeed, issues such as allergies, bowel difficulties, and even simple preferences would invariably make the program a hard sell to food stamp recipients, much less to state governments that would have to implement such an initiative.
