Secret Apple Code Posted On Github

Secret Apple Code Posted On Github”

Which, to the layman, seems like a big deal - but Apple says the source code that was leaked is outdated, meaning newer versions wouldn't be affected. The leaker hoped that the code would help the jailbreaking community circumvent Apple's notoriously hard to crack walled-garden mobile operating system.

The company wants its consumers to stay up to date with their iOS.

For example, iBoot runs when the iPhone transitions from a black screen to a white screen and then the iOS home screen. Sure, security measures on current versions of iOS may provide protection from most, but pouring over lines of code could give hackers insights into vulnerabilities and potential weak spots that hackers were heretofore unaware of.

One security researcher called it the 'biggest leak in [Apple's] history'.

Those contacts told the tech publication that the intern didn't have it out for Apple because of personal gripes, but rather that they convinced him to in order to contribute to security research they had been conducting.

Both of our sources say they believe that someone not associated with the original leak ultimately posted it on GitHub: "What leaked yesterday isn't even the full leak really". "[iBoot] is responsible for ensuring trusted boot operation of Apple's ioS software".

Apple countered suggestions that it was a huge security issue, arguing that few people - if indeed any at all - would be affected by iBoot's leaking.

Unfortunately for the company, copies of the code have already become available to many, and it remains to be seen if those prove to be disruptive to iOS devices.

"There are many layers of hardware and software protections built in to our products, and we always encourage customers to update to the newest software releases to benefit from the latest protections", the statement from Apple read.

The code has since popped up on other sites, which could give hackers a peak into the inner workings of Apple's iBoot software.

Though the code is for the iOS 9, some of the parts can be found in the iOS 11, notes The Verge.

Cyber security expert Amit Sethi from Synopsys said the leak was unlikely to have a major impact on users.

Apple is known for keeping its iOS source code private to secure its devices, including iPhones though some parts of iOS and MacOS have been made open source over the years.
